The European Union will introduce new rules from 18 February 2027 requiring portable batteries used in products such as smartphones and tablets to be readily removable and replaceable by users. Under the rules, batteries must be replaceable by the end user throughout the lifetime of the product. The requirement does not mean batteries must simply pop out by hand. Users may need commercially available tools to remove them, but manufacturers cannot require proprietary tools, heat or solvents. Specialised tools may be required only if they are supplied free with the product. Manufacturers will also have to provide instructions and safety information explaining how batteries can be removed and replaced, with the information made permanently available online. Replacement batteries must remain available as spare parts for at least five years after the last unit of a particular product model is placed on the market. The rules also restrict the use of software that prevents a compatible replacement battery from functioning properly. Limited exemptions will apply in certain cases, including products where user removal of the battery could create safety concerns or where a permanent battery connection is required for safety or data integrity.
