The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today ordered that Renuka Perera, former Chairman of the National Transport Commission, be remanded until September 29 following his arrest by the Bribery Commission in connection with a corruption allegation. The order was issued by Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama after considering submissions made by Bribery Commission officials and the suspect’s lawyers.  Perera, a senior Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) figure,  was produced before court earlier in the day, after which the remand order was delivered. Investigating officers told court that Perera was arrested over the issuance of 56 passenger transport permits for the Southern Expressway in violation of regulations. They said the suspect was taken into custody under charges of corruption. According to submissions, of the permits issued outside Cabinet approval, 30 were allocated to his committee, while 26 were distributed at his discretion to individuals of his choice.
