Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized that universities must ensure victim students have confidence in the measures being taken to investigate incidents of ragging. Speaking at a meeting of the Subcommittee on Higher Education, convened under the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education at Parliament, the Prime Minister said universities carry a moral responsibility to prevent and control ragging. She stressed that investigations must be efficient, effective, and conducted in a manner that provides relief to victim students without delay. The meeting also focused on vacancies in the higher education sector. The Prime Minister questioned university vice-chancellors on why appointments already approved by the Ministry had not yet been made, and instructed officials to expedite the process of filling vacancies.
