Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized that protecting the lives and welfare of street animals is a shared responsibility of all citizens. She noted that the recent approval of a Cabinet paper on animal welfare has created an opportunity for the Government to implement policies that will improve the lives and wellbeing of animals. The Prime Minister made these remarks while attending the inaugural ceremony of PET EXPO 2026 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), where she was the Chief Guest. The exhibition was organized by the Association of Companion Animal Practitioners of Sri Lanka (ACAPSL). During the event, Amarasuriya toured the “Aloka” exhibition booth dedicated to raising awareness on street animal welfare. She ceremonially inaugurated its activities by handing over a rescued street puppy to its new adopter. “I am pleased to see that veterinary services in Sri Lanka are continuing to develop with a clear vision for the future,” she said, while also urging the public to stop abandoning puppies and kittens at temples and other public places. She added that the bond between children and companion animals plays a vital role in nurturing empathy, compassion, kindness, and love. Recalling a recent story that gained international attention about a Sri Lankan girl and her porcupine companion, the Prime Minister highlighted how such relationships enrich childhood development.
