COLOMBO (News 1st); The National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd. (NSO) has appealed to the public to refrain from flying kites beneath or in the vicinity of 220 kV and 132 kV high-voltage transmission lines, transmission towers, and grid substations, warning that such activities pose a serious threat to the stability and security of the national electricity system.According to the NSO, numerous incidents have been reported in which kites and their strings became entangled in electricity transmission lines, causing transmission circuits to become inoperative. Such incidents can trigger electrical faults and lead to the automatic disconnection of transmission lines from the national grid. In addition, kites and strings caught in transmission infrastructure often have to be removed manually through controlled and safety-regulated procedures.The NSO warned that these incidents can have severe consequences for the stability and safety of the national power system and may even result in the shutdown of electricity generation units.Emphasizing the importance of ensuring the security, reliability, and uninterrupted operation of Sri Lanka's electricity network, the National System Operator called on the public to cooperate by avoiding the flying of kites near high-voltage transmission lines, transmission towers, and grid substations.
