COLOMBO (News 1st): Seventeen empty containers have fallen into the sea from a merchant vessel, approximately 17 nautical miles west of the Colombo Port.The Department of Fisheries stated that, based on prevailing sea currents, there is a high possibility that the containers could drift towards the coastline from Beruwala, through Negombo, up to Puttalam.The Department has advised all multi-day and small-scale fishing vessels operating or travelling in these sea areas to remain vigilant and exercise caution.Fishermen who spot any of the floating containers are requested to immediately inform the Fisheries Department’s radio communication centres or the officials at the nearest fisheries harbour.
