Anthropic has warned that artificial intelligence could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity as it unveiled details of its planned blockbuster stock market listing in the United States. The firm’s valuation is expected to surpass that of SpaceX, which set the record as the largest-ever stock listing at an initial valuation of approximately $1.8 trillion during the summer. While Anthropic has disclosed that it will list on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol ANT, making it the first pure-play AI company to go public, it has not yet revealed the number of shares to be offered, their price range, or the exact date for the listing. In financial details filed on Monday, the Claude chatbot developer reported a first-half loss exceeding $80.7 billion against $16.3 billion in revenue, while maintaining $112.4 billion in cash or equivalents. In its regulatory filing ahead of the debut, Anthropic acknowledged widespread concerns raised by policymakers, regulators, researchers, and internal staff regarding the safety of advanced AI models. The company stated that if advanced AI systems are not developed, deployed, and operated with appropriate safeguards, oversight, and security, they could pose catastrophic or existential risks, particularly if misused, replicated, weaponized, or granted high autonomy. Founded five years ago by Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei, his sister Daniela Amodei, and five co-founders, Anthropic first announced its intention to go public in June, prompting key rival OpenAI to announce its own plans for a public listing early next year. Following these announcements, both companies faced a series of cybersecurity and technological breaches involving autonomous AI agents, alongside public warnings from current and former employees about inadequate safeguards for future harms. Adding to its challenges, the owners of Elvis Presley’s music rights filed a lawsuit against Anthropic on Monday, alleging that hundreds of the star’s songs were used without authorization to train its Claude models.
