Permanent restoration work on the Taldena Irrigation Project in Meegahakiula, Badulla District, which was severely damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, commenced yesterday (18). The irrigation scheme was damaged at several locations due to the cyclone, and temporary repairs were carried out under the direct supervision of the Irrigation Department with the support of local farmers and the tri-forces. Following the successful completion of temporary restoration work, steps were taken to resume water supply from January 2026 to ensure that farming activities of the affected communities continued without disruption. The government has allocated Rs. 122.7 million for the initial phase of permanent restoration work on the Taldena Irrigation Project, which commenced yesterday. The project supports cultivation across 350 acres and directly benefits 415 farming families in the area. Authorities expect the restoration work to provide a long-term and sustainable solution for agricultural activities in the region.
