Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has voiced concern over what he described as the steady decline of religious life in modern society, saying many people are abandoning places of worship in favour of entertainment. Delivering a sermon, the Cardinal said churches in many developed countries are being closed as fewer people attend religious services. “People no longer come to churches. They foolishly gather at football stadiums and other places of entertainment in large numbers,” he said. The Cardinal said many of Europe’s largest cathedrals are now largely empty, which he described as a sign that faith in God has weakened. Reflecting on the French Revolution of 1789, Cardinal Malcolm said society has increasingly moved towards a world that seeks to live without God, with religious life now playing only a minimal role in many people’s lives. He further said that as societies claim to become more developed, they are, in many ways, moving away from true human values. Instead, he said, people are becoming preoccupied with physical needs and temporary pleasures while neglecting spiritual life. The Cardinal warned that this trend is leaving humanity increasingly isolated in a world of its own making, urging people to rediscover faith and the values that uphold human dignity.
