
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has gazetted a directive making SLS certification mandatory for all single-use sanitary towels sold in Sri Lanka from October 8, 2026. According to Extraordinary Gazette No. 2496/28, issued under Direction No. 99 of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, both locally manufactured and imported products must carry a valid Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) Product Certification Mark. The directive applies to: Single-use sanitary towels (SLS 1732) Single-use ultra-thin/slim sanitary towels (SLS 1748) From October 8, 2026, it will be prohibited to manufacture, import, pack, distribute, transport, store, sell or display for sale these products without the required SLS certification. The gazette states that imported products must also be inspected and approved for sale under the Import Inspection Scheme operated by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution. The CAA has advised consumers to check that sanitary towel packages carry a valid SLS certification mark before purchasing.
