A British woman of Sri Lankan origin is at the centre of an international child custody dispute after allegedly failing to return her two young sons to their American father following a court-approved visit to the United Kingdom. According to The Telegraph, Nishika Samaratunga, 34, has been missing with her sons, five-year-old Blaine and three-year-old Nathaniel, since March 29, when she allegedly failed to return them to their father, Ben Baier, in accordance with a Colorado court order. Mr. Baier has initiated proceedings in the High Court in London seeking the children’s return. He has raised concerns about their welfare, stating that both children are autistic and may not be receiving regular schooling or medical care. The High Court has authorised the publication of details of the case in an effort to help locate the children. Orders have also been issued to several organisations in the UK as part of attempts to trace Ms. Samaratunga and the boys. A Colorado court had previously awarded primary custody of the children to Mr. Baier after rejecting Ms. Samaratunga’s request to relocate them to London. A U.S. judge later authorised law enforcement to take custody of the children, citing concerns they could be in imminent danger. The case remains before courts in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
