A team owner of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) franchise Jaffna Kings has been arrested by the Sri Lanka Police Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports over alleged match-fixing offences. Police confirmed the arrest was made ahead of the official launch of the 2026 Lanka Premier League, which is scheduled to take place today. The suspect, identified as one of the owners of the Jaffna Kings franchise, was taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged sports-related corruption. Sri Lanka has some of the world’s toughest laws against sports corruption under the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, which criminalises match-fixing, spot-fixing and other forms of manipulation in sport, with offenders facing substantial fines and prison sentences upon conviction.
