The wife of the late Sri Lankan Olympian Ranatunge Karunananda, will now receive monthly financial assistance from the President’s Fund to support her medical treatment and clinical needs. It has been reported that Rs. 20,000 will be allocated each month to ensure her care. Karunananda, who famously finished last in the 10,000‑metre race at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics but won worldwide admiration for his perseverance, passed away more than 50 years ago. While his legacy remains etched in Olympic history, his family has lived quietly, with recent reports revealing that his widow has been suffering from illness. Following a visit to her home in Naththandiya about a month ago, arrangements were made to provide sustained support through the President’s Fund, it was reported. The initiative was facilitated after retired civil engineer Upul Ranjan brought her situation to light, with the Divisional Secretary of Naththandiya and her staff playing a key role in ensuring the assistance was processed efficiently.
