
The Colombo High Court today commenced the trial against former Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody, who faces corruption charges filed by the Bribery Commission. The case was taken up before High Court Judge Rashantha Godawela. During proceedings, the charges against Jayakody were read out in open court, to which the accused pleaded not guilty. The trial then formally began. According to the Bribery Commission, the allegations stem from Jayakody’s tenure in 2016 as Procurement Manager of the Lanka Fertilizer Company. He is accused of awarding a contract for carpeting the company’s warehouse premises in a manner that gave undue advantage to a private firm, allegedly causing a financial loss of Rs. 8,859,708 to the government. The trial is expected to continue with witness testimony and submissions in the coming days.
