The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says statements will be obtained today (16) from officials of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as part of ongoing investigations into complaints that former State Intelligence Service Director Suresh Sallay has been subjected to torture while in detention. Commissioner Nimal G. Punchihewa confirmed that the inquiry continues following a complaint lodged by Sallay’s relatives, alleging he had faced various forms of ill‑treatment in CID custody. Based on the complaint, a special inspection was carried out on the detention cell where Sallay is being held. The HRCSL noted several shortcomings, including inadequate ventilation and other basic deficiencies, in the facility. The Commission said it has already informed CID officials of these concerns and has recorded statements from other detainees housed near Sallay’s cell, as well as from CID officers. Further statements from CID officials are scheduled, while the HRCSL also stated that attention has been directed to the medical facilities currently being provided to Sallay, who remains hospitalized.
