Three major tourism development initiatives, including a proposed ferry service between Galle and Kankesanthurai, plans to promote film tourism, and the development of the Southern Mist Corridor, were discussed at a meeting of the Presidential Task Force for the Tourism Sector. The meeting was held at the Presidential Secretariat under the chairmanship of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, with the participation of senior government officials and key industry stakeholders. Among the proposals reviewed was the development of marine tourism, with officials noting that a proposal has already been submitted to the Board of Investment (BOI). Preparations are also underway to launch a ferry service connecting Galle and Kankesanthurai (KKS). The task force also discussed film tourism and efforts to strengthen the sector through new legislation. Authorities said a new Act for the film industry is being drafted, while an appointed committee will oversee approval processes until the law is enacted. Another key focus was the Southern Mist Corridor, a newly proposed tourism zone linking Galle, Matara and Rathnapura. The project has been formally submitted to the task force for review, and a steering committee has been appointed to conduct a feasibility study under the leadership of the minister together with government officials and the Director General of Planning and Development. The meeting was attended by Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Presidential Adviser Duminda Hulangamuwa, several Members of Parliament representing the Southern Mist Corridor region, senior government officials and tourism industry stakeholders.
