The United National Party (UNP) has officially introduced two new membership categories targeting younger generations, as part of efforts to restructure its party membership. The new categories, Millennium UNP and Gen Z UNP, were formally announced at a meeting of the party’s Working Committee held at its Sirikotha headquarters in Pitakotte. UNP Leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe confirmed the representation of both groups during the meeting. According to the party, Millennium UNP will represent individuals aged between 35 and 40, while Gen Z UNP will represent young people born after 2000. UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena claimed this was the first time a political party in Sri Lanka had introduced membership categories specifically representing two generations. Abeywardena said the Working Committee also held extensive discussions on the party’s Green Paper, which proposes a 20-year development programme instead of traditional five-year election manifestos. He further said Wickremesinghe had outlined the need for political parties to work together under a common understanding rather than operating independently. The former President also explained a proposed mechanism for achieving cooperation among political parties, Abeywardena added.
