The United National Party (UNP) has strongly condemned the arrest of SLPP National Organiser and MP Namal Rajapaksa by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), alleging that the move was politically motivated. In a statement issued on September 4, the UNP claimed Rajapaksa was arrested in an attempt to disrupt an SLPP public rally scheduled to be held under his leadership in Anuradhapura on September 12. The party said Rajapaksa should enjoy the same democratic right to hold political rallies across the country as President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, arguing that attempts to deprive him of that right were unacceptable in a democratic society. The UNP also claimed that such actions reflected what it described as the government’s declining public support. “Public support enjoyed by political leaders cannot be eliminated through arrests,” the UNP said, urging the government to respect democratic political activity.
