COLOMBO (News 1st); A total of 431 substandard helmets have been seized by the Consumer Affairs Authority during island-wide raids.The Authority stated that legal action has been taken against those found using the helmets.Meanwhile, Consumer Affairs Authority Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon said legal action has also been taken against two institutions involved in manufacturing 3,500 substandard helmets.The Chairman of the National Council for Road Safety, Manjula Kularatne, said that between 2,500 and 2,700 people die annually due to road traffic accidents.He added that nearly 1,000 of these deaths are caused by motorcycle accidents.
