COLOMBO (News 1st) Amid the recent unrest reported at Colombo Magazine Prison, the United National Party (UNP) has written to the Acting Commissioner General of Prisons expressing concern over the safety of former Education Minister and party Deputy Leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

In its communication to prison authorities, the party stressed that the safety and wellbeing of the former minister must be ensured while he remains in custody.

The letter, signed by UNP General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala, notes that Akila Viraj Kariyawasam's life could be at risk in the current environment and reminds prison authorities of their responsibility to guarantee his protection.

The UNP has also requested an opportunity for a discussion with the Acting Commissioner General of Prisons on the matter.
