COLOMBO (News 1st) - A committee has been appointed to assess the damage caused to property at Mahara Prison during the recent unrest involving prison inmates.Acting Commissioner General of Prisons Prasad Hemantha said that during the unrest, which broke out among a group of inmates last Saturday afternoon (01), prisoners had damaged several prison facilities, including the prison kitchen, the Chief Jailer's office, the Rehabilitation Division, and other prison property.The committee has been tasked with assessing the extent of the damage and submitting urgent recommendations for the restoration of the affected facilities.Meanwhile, a separate three-member committee has been appointed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Mahara Prison incident.The Acting Commissioner General said the committee has already commenced its investigation.One inmate was killed and eight others were injured during the unrest on Saturday.The Department of Prisons said security inside the prison and surroundings has now been fully restored.
